I am concerned for the welfare of Mukhtar Mai and her colleagues of Meerwala, Punjab, Pakistan.
As you are aware, Mai’s safety and security are continually at risk. In addition to general hostility against her, there has been pressure placed on her by Federal Minister Abdul Qayum Jatoi and his associates with regard to her ongoing court case. Minister Jatoi has demanded Mukhtar drop charges against her attackers, even though the attackers have been found guilty of their heinous crimes of rape and assault by an earlier court of law. You may be aware that Minister Jatoi is related to the Mastoi tribe members who were found guilty of these crimes, and that he is acting on their behalf.
It is imperative that Mai and her colleagues are protected from those who would cause her further harm, and I trust you will do everything in your power to see that justice is upheld and Mukhtar Mai, along with her family, friends and colleagues, remains safe and secure.
